How to buy a laptop

Do you really need a laptop?

If you are not sure - don't buy one, but a desktop. A desktop is cheaper and it's more comfortable to use and easier to own. It will have a more convenient keyboard and a faster CPU.

There is only one thing a person might really need a laptop for - mobility. When you need to go somewhere and work on your computer there. Moreover if you need that often. Then you really should buy a laptop.


What screen to choose - 11.6', 13.3' or 15'? Choose a 13.3 screen - it's quite enough for most of the tasks. 11.6' is too small - it's a toy. While 15' is too big. Most of the times a bigger screen is better, but not when we are talking about laptops. A 15' laptop will be heavy and thick - because it needs a bigger battery, and if it has a small battery it's not worth trying altogether. A 15' laptop won't always fit into whatever bag you have, and it will be more expensive. Unnessesarily expensive. Because what's nessesary and enough - it's all there, in a 13.3' laptop. It's small, thin and light enough to be universally portable. It's big enough for any task at hand. And it's cheaper, than 15'.

Pay attention to the quality of screen expressed in PPI - pixels per inch, and to the matrix type - these are among the most important features for a laptop. A good screen would have about 400 ppi. Those are fine-grained pixels that will make a picture look natural on the screen. And a matrix type is the technology of the screen. An IPS matrix would be a good screen. They have LED light coming from behind each pixel, and pixels act as switches - they let the light through or block it. Some people complain that light shines through pixels that should be black - but people will always complain about something.

As to me - I have a laptop with an IPS screen, and for me it's fine! Colors are vibrant and vivid, and black is downright black.

VA matrix would also be a good screen. In VA screens pixels don't block light - they emit light themselves. When they are off they don't emit anything - and that's why VA screens are famous for their true black. For some reason VA screens are rare in laptops.

Stay away from TN matrixes - they are cheap and that is their only strong point.


Now you should choose CPU. Most of the time Intel Core i5 will be fine for writing texts, browsing internet, watching movies and connecting to your bank account. Intel Core i7 will be a little faster, while Core i3 will be a little slower. There is a good chance that the lifespan of your laptop will be over 10 years. Choose a better CPU to minimize the time that you will spend over these years waiting for your laptop to load pages or copy files.


Choosing RAM you should mind your intended usage of the laptop. If you will use it to check emails from your grandchildern once a week - you will go fine with 4Gb of RAM. But if you are an active person who may have a few applications open simultaneously - like a browser with a few tabs, a spreadsheet and a word processor - you should go for 8Gb to let all that run smoothly.

Definitely opt in for DDR4 - if your CPU is eligible, and pick RAM with higher frequency - it will run faster.


Recent laptops had HDDs - a spacious hefty metal devices that constantly buzzed, vibrated, consumed a lot of power and heated up the laptop. Today laptops have SSDs - tiny light-weight chips that don't vibrate, don't consume power, don't heat up the laptop and work much faster than HDDS. Besides, there is data that shows that SSDs are more reliable than HDDs.

According to today's standards, 128Gb is the minimal disk size for a laptop, 256Gb is average, 512Gb is good and 1Tb is ideal. Choose a bigger one to avoid missing out on tomorrow's opportunities.

I/O ports

Modern laptops are so thin, that they don't have space for a normal RJ45 LAN port. Thus, slim laptops have a tiny port used to connect to LAN through an RJ45 expansion adapter.

Slim laptops also have no space to incorporate a full-sized HDMI port. They only have space for Mini HDMI - which is no problem to use when you have a mini HDMI adapeter or mini to full HDMI cable.

You will definitely want at least one USB3.0 port and couple USB2.0 ports. SD card reader slots are not that important.


Weight is the next most important parameter for laptop's portability. The best contemporary models incorporating the newest technologies dropped weight down to 1.4kg or 3lb.


The best laptops are equipped with Li-polymer batteries of 7000mAh. That translates roughly to 7 hours of work. Of course there are models with 5000 or 4000mAh. Choose according to your intended usage.


Wifi connectivity is an issue of vital importance. Today lots of people live in big cities, where their computers will hear signals of 30 neighboring routers, most of which will fight to share 13 available channels of 2.4GHz band. That's why it is very important dual band (2.4/5GHz) WiFi module in your laptop.


Bluetooth is a must have feature. Versions 4.0 and above are fine for hands-free headsets and HiFi audio sinks.


Ergonimics makes the rest of difference. Aluminium alloy case is the best choice, because it is durable and light-weight. It's also nice to look at, as a free bonus. Backlit keyboard is nice to have. Always buy a laptop with a full-sized (not diminished) keyboard.

Earlier laptops had touchpads, that were equipped with two buttons to emulate left and right mouse buttons. Then Apple Inc. invented a trackpad - a touchpad, where the left and right buttons were hidden beneath the front left and right areas of the trackpad.

IMO the touchpad is better with the buttons, then without buttons. When I type on a laptop with a trackpad, I occasionally happen to touch the trackpad with my palms, which translates to sudden mouseclicks with the cursor jumping out of sight. For that reason - and for the reason of pure convenience I prefer to switch off the trackpad and use the laptop with a mouse.

To buy or not to buy?

It's always good to have a new quick slim shiny expensive laptop. Prefer it over your old one - the big, heavy and hot one with a faded picture. It's worth it!
